The most effective way to stop smoking and stay off cigarettes? Vape pens and other e-cigarette gear, says a major new study.

Vape man. Photo of a handsome young white guy with modern haircut in the black clothes vaping and letting off steam from an electronic cigarette near Smokers have battled for years to get off cigarettes, and many have tried all sorts of remedies and cessation methods — only for them not to work and so they end up lighting up all over again. It's always been a huge battle and one that many people just cannot seem to win because their addiction to nicotine is too strong and they cannot shake it without some serious help. Even such things as hypnotherapy to try to convince yourself to lay off the cigarettes doesn't always have much of an effect — neither does smoking tons of cigarettes to make yourself sick — hopefully so sick of nicotine that you never want to have it again. Many smokers have instead relied on nicotine gums, patches and sprays and more, including lozenges, with varying degrees of success. Now, finally, we have a highly effective way of quitting tobacco: the e-cigarette, including vape pens and the wide variety of other vape hardware. A major new study, from University College London, has found that e-cigarettes can as much as double the success rates of people quitting smoking, and staying off them for good. This is no small matter, as here in the UK, at least 100,000 people die from tobacco-related diseases every year, and around the world, the cigarette death toll is more than 8 million — around 1 million of whom never smoked but were exposed to secondhand smoke and ended up dying from it.

Huge Quitting Success with Vapes

In fact, the study says those trying to get off cigarettes are around 95% more likely to win their battle if they use vapes instead. This is tremendous news for the many millions of smokers not only in the UK but right around the world — and it's estimated that altogether, around 1.1 billion people are still puffing away each day. Compared to this near-perfect success rate, smokers who used nicotine patches, gums and lozenges were only 34% more likely to succeed in quitting, the study found. This was no ordinary piece of research either; it was funded by Cancer Research UK and involved almost 19,000 people who had tried to stop smoking within the previous year. And the researchers tracked the study participants over 12 years, from 2006 to 2018. Some quit-smoking success was found with nicotine replacement therapies, however, but it was mainly with older smokers — a demographic that may be reluctant to use new technologies such as vape pens.

Nicotine Therapy Concerns

The problem with smoking is not so much the nicotine in tobacco but the many thousands of toxic chemicals generated in the burning process, dozens of which are known to cause cancers and other diseases. No one smokes for carcinogens but the nicotine that gives them a buzz and makes them feel relaxed. This is why vape pens and other e-cigarettes are proving such a hit: you can get the nicotine you want, at various levels or even none, if you wean yourself off and just enjoy fruity and other flavours, and avoid almost all the harm. "Stopping smoking reduces the risk of chronic diseases and increases quality of life and life expectancy. It is therefore important that every quit attempt has the best possible chance of success," said Dr Sarah Jackson of UCL's Epidemiology & Health Care, who was the lead author of the study. "Our study adds to growing evidence that use of e-cigarettes can help smokers to quit. It also raises concerns about the apparent lack of effectiveness of [nicotine patches, lozenges and gums] bought from a shop." Vapes, it turns out, are increasingly helping to win the deadly war on smoking. Tried nicotine patches, gums and everything else to try to get off cigarettes, and nothing's working for you?
