Now a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dickpuddlecote.blogspot.bg\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prominent vaping blogger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has uncovered the smoking gun. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most important vaping breakthroughs of 2015 was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/457102\/Ecigarettes_an_evidence_update_A_report_commissioned_by_Public_Health_England_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence update<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Health England <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which estimated that \u201ce-cigarettes are 95% less harmful to your health than normal cigarettes\u201d. The report was enormous, worked on by leading experts and reviewed 185 previous studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the report was quickly and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clivebates.com\/?p=3429\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controversially attacked in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Lancet<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a giant of British medical publishing, for being \u201cflimsy\u201d and connected to the tobacco industry. The attacks were unsubstantiated, but the reputational damage was done, with a number of national newspapers <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2015\/sep\/15\/experts-criticise-public-health-england-e-cigarettes-review\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">echoing the criticisms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here\u2019s the catch \u2014 the attacks in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lancet <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were published anonymously, leaving many to speculate about the actual author\u2019s identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-767 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.electrictobacconist.co.uk\/image-factory\/deb4740780bf4aee6ef6278d2c748526dbfb043d~1080x1920@2x\/images\/products\/x5HvcZxLJscrmn5oFyra6sRvDpEI02ZnO9paWXvU.jpg\" alt=\"ecig bad news\" width=\"544\" height=\"306\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Anti-vaping activist exposed?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the prime suspects was Martin McKee, or to give him his full title, Martin McKee, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor of European Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (and topical medicine is related to vaping how exactly?) Martin McKee quickly denied that he was the anonymous author on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Medical Journal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website. Here\u2019s his quote:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McNeill and colleagues state that responses to \u201cour earlier accusations and inaccuracies have been published\u201d. The references they cite imply that we were authors of a Lancet editorial that also criticised their report.[1] For the avoidance of doubt, <\/span><b>we were not\u2026\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the thing\u2026 actually it looks like he was the anonymous author all along. And it looks like he was so desperate to hide this fact that he <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lied to the British Medical Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Lying in a professional medical journal is not like one of those little white lies that you can get away with. It\u2019s more like lying in court or lying about your medical research because these lies have serious real-world consequences for public health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The smoking gun linking Martin McKee to the anonymous <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lancet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attack is an email that was accessed through a freedom of information request. Here\u2019s the email:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDear Sally,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you might expect, I\u2019m doing a response to the PHE report in the BMJ. See attached \u2014 currently with lawyers for clearance\u2026 so not sure what will finally come out. However, I thought you should know what I discovered about the genesis of the 95% figure. I\u2019ve summarised it in the attached, but I have much much more, and it will really not reflect well PHE at all\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(as you will see <\/span><b>I fully endorse what you say, both here and in the Lancet piece coming out next week<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that does not go into the murky depths)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happy to talk by phone,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martin\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Emphasis added.) That email was sent August 21st 2015, one week before the anonymous attack came out in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lancet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0This means that it is quite possible that he lied about being the anonymous author. Worse still, it is quite possible that he lied about being the anonymous author on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Medical Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What can we learn from this?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of key takeaways here:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Public Health Officials are prepared to lie <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the most prestigious publications in order to smear vaping.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The Lancet is complicit here<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Martin McKee is an anti-vaping activist \u2014 if he was behind the letter, he should not have been allowed to publish anonymously as he has a clear conflict of interest.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later on, <\/span><b>Martin McKee seems to have replied <\/b><b><i>to his own anonymous attack<\/i><\/b><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ironically, in his reply to himself he attacks others for failing to declare conflicts of interest&#8230;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another troubling factor is the fact that the Sally that Martin McKee was writing to is none other than Sally Davies, the UK government\u2019s Chief Medical Officer and outspoken critic of e-cigarettes. The records show that <\/span><b>she has been exchanging hundreds of emails with a small number of anti-vaping activists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all the while ignoring the evidence from the Department of Health which showed e-cigarettes to be safer than tobacco products. It seems likely that she will face questions over her role in this scandal. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evidence is clear: public health officials (and the newspapers they speak to) are not to be trusted when it comes to e-cigarettes.
