Learn how to defeat pseudo-science. <\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a journalist misrepresents the facts in showbiz, then reputations are bruised. But if a journalist misrepresents a study about public health, then people\u2019s lives are on the line. In a recent blog, we saw how one scientist is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrictobacconist.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/could-swapping-from-smoking-to-vaping-help-you-dodge-a-heart-attack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using e-cigarettes to help smokers lower their blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s an excellent health benefit, one that could help smokers in the real world avoid heart attacks and strokes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in the same week, we saw many national newspapers report on a different study, one that simply speculated about the potential health risks of e-cigarettes without actually studying any of the people that used them. How many current smokers with high blood pressure have been frightened off switching to vaping thanks to inconclusive scare-stories? Even one is too many, and I suspect that the real number is far higher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrictobacconist.co.uk\/image-factory\/c66951d134ea735d4b3dd2394be46d82842c948d~3456x5184@2x\/images\/products\/wDCl8Z1qBLjN03eQwFw66B2lW2j1IE634uBwn23g.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.electrictobacconist.co.uk\/image-factory\/c66951d134ea735d4b3dd2394be46d82842c948d~3456x5184@2x\/images\/products\/wDCl8Z1qBLjN03eQwFw66B2lW2j1IE634uBwn23g.jpg\" alt=\"vaping studies\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s obvious now that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ep-ology.com\/2015\/06\/24\/working-paper-phillips-burstyn-carter-the-limited-value-of-journal-peer-review-in-public-health-a-case-series-of-tobacco-harm-reduction-articles\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we can\u2019t count on the scientists or the media to cover vaping objectively<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s time for vapers to learn how to read studies so that we can spot junk science early on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Does what the scientists say match what they actually found?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science doesn\u2019t tell us whether something is healthy or unhealthy. Science simply gives us some evidence that may sway us one way or the other. But the scientists that collect the evidence are not infallible \u2014 sometimes they make mistakes. Even worse, sometimes the evidence says one thing yet the scientists say another. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the infamous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/sandiegogate\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#SanDiegoGate vaping study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, human cells were doused in e-cigarette vapour and measured for signs of damage. After eight weeks, the researchers were able to find some signs of damage, leading one scientist to write in a press release that e-cigarette vapour <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be \u201cno safer than smoking tobacco\u201d. This misleading statement made headlines around the world. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the scientists didn\u2019t tell the newspapers the whole story. They also tested humans cells by exposing them to cigarette smoke \u2014 but their research was cut short because all of the human cells exposed to cigarette smoke died in under twenty-four hours. In other words, they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that e-cigarettes may be more harmful to human cells, but what they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> actually showed the complete opposite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, some observers noticed the mistake. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam Jacobs called out the Daily Telegraph\u2019s flawed coverage of the story as the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.statsguy.co.uk\/dangerous-nonsense-about-vaping\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most dangerous, irresponsible, and ill-informed piece of health journalism of 2015<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; A correction was issued, one that made it clear how lethal cigarette smoke is. But you can\u2019t unring the bell \u2014 perhaps millions of people read the misleading headlines yet only a handful saw the correction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Do the numbers add up?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Second World War, British secret services went undercover equipped with a cyanide pill. This lethal pill enabled agents to commit suicide rather than fall into enemy hands. It killed them in minutes. You may be aware that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2015\/oct\/11\/cyanide-in-fruit-seeds-how-dangerous-is-an-apple\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apple seeds contain cyanide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But because the amount of cyanide is so small, it\u2019s extremely unlikely that you could ever eat enough apple seeds to poison yourself \u2014 there\u2019s a reason that apples are not widely feared. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The point is that highly toxic chemicals are more common than you might imagine. We find them in the air we breathe, the drinks we consume and even in our own bloodstream. A toxic chemical is only problematic if there is enough of it to pose a health risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/press-releases\/e-cigarette-flavoring-chemicals-linked-to-respiratory-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard study found a chemical called diacetyl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e-cigarette flavorings. Diacetyl occurs naturally in apples, beans and butter and is used as a flavouring because it is delicious. But diacetyl is also linked (inconclusively) to a particularly nasty disease called popcorn lung.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The media reported the finding of diacetyl in some e-liquid brands as evidence that e-cigarettes may cause popcorn lung. But the real question is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how much diacetyl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is present in e-cigarette vapor, and is it enough to pose a health risk? Dr. Michael Siegel measured the amount of diacetyl in some e-liquids and found that the amount of diacetyl present was truly tiny \u2014 we\u2019re talking cyanide in apples levels here. But he did find that regular tobacco cigarettes contained a sizeable amount of diacetyl. In fact, his research showed that the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tobaccoanalysis.blogspot.co.uk\/2015\/12\/new-study-finds-that-average-diacetyl.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">daily exposure to diacetyl from smoking was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">750 times higher<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than the daily exposure to diacetyl from vaping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means that by swapping to e-cigarettes, vapers can drastically reduce their diacetyl intake.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Does the study examine real-world vaping behaviour?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take something and use it in a way that it is not intended to be used, then you will probably run into danger somewhere along the line. For instance, just because you could theoretically drink boiling water out of a kettle doesn\u2019t mean that drinking tea which has been left to cool is an unhealthy thing to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you overheat your vape pen, you can create the dreaded \u201cdry hit\u201d \u2014 a bitter tasting inhale that no sane vaper would ever intentionally go after. But researchers decided to study the dry hit and found that a dry hit contains high levels of formaldehyde. However, in publishing the research, the scientists did not make it clear that their study did not reflect what vapers were actually doing, leading to once again to ridiculous headline land. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proper research showed that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/news\/archive\/2015-05\/21\/e-cigarette-formaldehyde\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e-cigarettes do not produce significant amounts of formaldehyde in real-world conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that regular vaping involves significantly less -aldehydes than regular smoking. This isn\u2019t the only time that scientists have misunderstood vaping technology. In other experiments scientists have studied <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concentrated flavourings <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rather than actual flavourings, got sub-ohm vaping completely wrong and blatantly ignored the manufacturer\u2019s dosage recommendations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flawed vaping studies will continue to be published blindly by the newspapers. It\u2019s up to us to educate ourselves on the science.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line is you can\u2019t trust a study just because it is a \u2018study\u2019 and you certainly can\u2019t trust media reporting on a given study.
