We delve into how vaping is a healthier alternative to smoking and why it\u2019s not a so-called \u201cgateway\u201d, as previously thought.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2015\/p0416-e-cigarette-use.html\" target=\"_blank\">stories in the news<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently have been propagating claims that with the rising number of adolescents turning to e-cigarettes, the result will be a \u201c<\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/312535.php\" target=\"_blank\">nicotine epidemic<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, with more young people eventually turning to smoking traditional cigarettes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A report published in 2015 by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the USA stated that <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2015\/p0416-e-cigarette-use.html\" target=\"_blank\">e-cig use<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among middle and high school students tripled between 2013 and 2014. At first glance, this might sound concerning. Look closer at the figures, however, and you\u2019ll see that the rate increased by just 1.3% and 4.5%, respectively. Despite this rise, regular e-cigarette use among children <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ash.org.uk\/files\/documents\/ASH_959.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">remains rare<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is most common among those who currently smoke or did so previously. This indicates that e-cigarettes are not acting as a <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/archpedi.jamanetwork.com\/article.aspx?articleid=2436539\" target=\"_blank\">gateway to smoking<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like previous studies have claimed.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why Do Children Buy E-Cigarettes?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the majority of vapers use e-cigs as a smoking cessation tool, children cite a different reason for buying an e-cigarette.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1048\" src=\"https:\/\/www.electrictobacconist.co.uk\/image-factory\/cba65eb9632412750626677fe4d437bba03f5713~1126x1688@2x\/images\/products\/fCjwIL8DIl7pSyiCyzH6mHZN6b3nqhNd6liz3gkT.jpg\" alt=\"Group of Teenagers In Park Boy Smoking Electronic Cigarette | electric tobacconist US\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" data-image=\"afqtvyw4fsk6\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Vaping for Flavour<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a paper in the Tobacco Control journal, researchers surveyed students on how often they used a vaping device and their reason for doing so. <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tc.bmj.com\/lookup\/doi\/10.1136\/tobaccocontrol-2016-053014\" target=\"_blank\">66-67%<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of those surveyed cited <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrictobacconist.co.uk\/vampire-vape-m57\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flavouring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as their reason for using e-cigs. These findings even prompted researchers to question the term \u201cENDS\u201d being used to describe e-cigarettes, since the devices are not always used for the purpose of inhaling nicotine:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The term stands for &#8216;electronic nicotine delivery system,&#8217; which seems inaccurate for the description of a device that the majority of youth do not use to vape nicotine\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Richard Meich, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are kids vaping?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published in Tobacco Control<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A further study by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) found that in the UK, rechargeable tanks&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are the most popular types of e-cigarettes among young users. They also stated that flavour was the popular reason for vaping, with fruit flavours such as the <\/span><b>berry, vanilla and confectionery flavours <\/b>being the<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;most commonly used.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Still, Children Shouldn\u2019t Be Encouraged to Vape<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an ideal world young children wouldn\u2019t smoke \u2014 or vape \u2014 at all. If children become addicted to smoking, they are opening themselves up to a host of health problems later in life, such as an increased <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/tobacco\/cessation-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\">risk of cancer<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrictobacconist.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/04\/vaping-saved-my-life\/\">high blood pressure<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same ASH study found that just 4% of those surveyed had never smoked before trying e-cigarettes. Even more so, these e-cigarette users are not doing so as part of a perceived <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ireport.cnn.com\/docs\/DOC-1235764\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cfad\u201d or \u201ctrend\u201d<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; they are doing so because they believe e-cigarettes are less harmful than cigarettes. We can take heart in these statistics, which demonstrate that children aren\u2019t vaping just because they want to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While e-cigs are clearly proven to be healthier than cigarettes and are not as a gateway to smoking, as previously thought, this isn\u2019t to say we should encourage young people to use them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an increasing number of young people vaping, it certainly shines a negative light on the vaping industry. However, we must remember that these numbers are still incredibly low and less of a cause for concern than the increasing number of children choosing to smoke. As a device that can still deliver nicotine, it is the responsibility of retailers to ensure that they are not selling e-cigarettes to people below the age of eighteen.
