Coils

All e-cigarettes function because of their coils. Vape coils are a key element of any kit, from vape pen to box mod, ensuring that the e-liquid can get to temperature and vapour can be produced. There are a range of different kinds of coils on the market and sometimes it can be hard to know exactly what you need to perfect your vape. About Vape Coils

Vape coils are a replaceable element of most vape kits. The unit which heats the e-liquid and turns it into vapour is known as the atomiser or coil. It simply refers to a coil of wire wrapped in wicking material, which can absorb the e-liquid and draw it into and through the coil. When the vape pen is on, the power from the battery heats the coil and vapourises the e-liquid.

Atomiser heads feature an outer casing, the wire in the form of the coil, and the wicking material, which is often cotton. The way the wire is wrapped around the wicking material creates the coils. Coils are available in different metal types and also in different resistance levels.

Ohms And Why They Matter

Most vape coils have an ohm rating between 0.4 and 2.0. Worded simply, the ohm or resistance rating measures how much heat the coil can conduct, with lower ratings meaning more heat. Typically, the vape kit you opt for will have a set of compatible coils, so you don't need to worry too much about the resistance. 50/50 nic salt e-liquids work well with almost all coils, so if you're unsure of compatibility, this is a great place to start.

When buying coils, you may see them referred to as sub-ohm, meaning their resistance level is 1 ohm or below. There are significant differences between the resistances, as they create an entirely different vape experience. Sub-ohm coils are suitable with high VG e-liquids or short-fills.

Lower ohm coils offer a warmer flavour and large amounts of vapour. E-liquids are used up more quickly with lower ohm vape coils, but this is due to more power being used to create amplified vapour and intense flavour.

Higher ohm vape coils use less e-liquid and provide a cooler, less intense vaping experience. It's also recommended that you choose the right kind of e-liquid for your e-cig coil resistance. Lower ohm coils are best enjoyed with liquids that have a high vegetable glycerin (VG) formula, whereas higher ohm coils work best with high PG (propylene glycol) formulas.

How Often You Should Replace Your Coils

E-cig coils are designed to be replaced, and the number of variables involved in their design will affect how long they last. Guidelines about replacing coils are very general, and it is something you should feel as you vape rather than look for exact timescales.

Heavy vapers who vape continuously throughout the day may need to replace their vape coils every five to seven days. Vapers who vape consistently but only take one to two drags each time may find their e-cig coils last 14 days. Light vapers who take a few hits here or there but are never consistently attached to their e-cig may see their coils lasting as long as three weeks or even more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fix a burnt vape coil?

Unfortunately, once a coil has burnt out, it is no longer salvageable. We recommend replacing your burnt-out coil with a new one.

How do I prime a coil?

When using a fresh coil, this does need to go through the proper priming process. First, add a few drops of e-liquid to the wicking holes on your coil. Secondly, install the coil into your vape tank and fill it up with e-liquid, ensuring you leave a slight gap. Take 2-3 dry pulls on your tank, without it being connected to the device, to pull the e-liquid into the coil. Then, wait 5-10 minutes, and you can begin vaping!

Why is my coil burning so fast?

Coils burn out quicker for several reasons. These include:

  • Using sweet or dark-coloured e-liquids decreases the lifespan of your coil. Try clear-coloured, menthol or nicotine-free liquids instead.
  • You are not priming them before first use. Follow the correct priming steps before using a fresh coil.
  • You are taking deep and long drags. Try shorter pulls.
  • You are letting your tank completely run out of e-liquid before refilling it again. Keep checking your tank/pod to see the e-liquid level and fill it when it's less than half full.
  • You are laying your vape on its side, which pools the e-liquid to one side of the coil, causing dry hits (as the coil is only saturated on one side). Keep your vape upright and unscrew your tank when charging.
