About Coils & Tanks

Vape coils are a replaceable component in most vape devices. They are the part responsible for heating the e-liquid and turning it into vapour, and they can also be referred to as atomisers. Atomisers consist of a wire coil wrapped in wicking material, which absorbs the e-liquid and pulls it into the coil. When your vape kit is activated, the battery powers the coil, heating it and vapourising the e-liquid. Atomiser heads include an outer casing, the coil wire, and the wicking material (usually cotton). The way in which the wire wraps around the wick forms the coil. Coils come in various types of metal and have different resistance levels.

Even the simplest of vape kits need a tank to function. The tank stores the e-liquid, which is vapourised by the internal coil. As you explore more advanced vaping hardware, such as sub-ohm kits, you'll find a wider variety of vape tanks with diverse features. Tanks significantly impact your vaping experience, influencing flavour intensity and vapour production, which is why it's crucial to choose the right one for your needs. Different tanks are optimised for various aspects of vaping, allowing you to tailor your vape setup to your preferences.

Types of Vape Tanks

Refillable Pods

Refillable pods are similar to vape tanks; however, tanks usually screw onto your vape pen while pods click into place with a magnetic connection. These types of cartridges are user-friendly, with most of them like Vaporesso XROS pods featuring built-in coils and a snap-on mouthpiece. Some use replaceable coils, such as the Caliburn X pods. Refillable pods are ideal for mouth-to-lung vaping and are typically compatible with refillable pod vapes. They are designed for beginners as well as experienced vapers who prefer a more straightforward vaping setup.

Clearomizers

Clearomizers are compatible with a variety of vape pens. As their name implies, they are transparent, allowing users to monitor their e-liquid levels easily. They integrate the coil, wick, and e-liquid into a single unit and do not contain any filler material, which helps produce cleaner and more natural-tasting flavours. Some clearomizers, such as the blu Pro, have built-in coils, while others, like the Vapouriz Fuse tank, use replaceable atomisers.

Sub-ohm Tanks

A sub-ohm tank, like the eLeaf iJust D20, is designed for vaping high VG e-liquids and typically offers more adjustable features than a regular tank, such as customisable airflow. Airflow control is crucial in sub-ohm tanks, enabling users to streamline their draw. Sub-ohm vapers favour a direct-to-lung vaping style, often leaving the airflow open for a loose, airy inhale and voluminous vapour production. Sub-ohm vaping refers to using a coil with a resistance below 1.0ohm.

Coils & Ohms - What Does it All Mean?

A majority of coils have an ohm resistance between 0.4 and 2.0. Essentially, the ohm rating measures how much heat the atomizer can conduct—lower resistances mean the coil can take more heat. Generally, your vape kit will come with compatible coils, so you don't need to worry much about your ohm rating. 50/50 nicotine salts are compatible with almost all coils, making them a great starting point for your vaping journey.

When shopping for coils, you may come across ones labelled as 'sub-ohm'—this means their resistance rating is 1.0ohm or below. Different ohm ratings can create distinct vaping experiences. Sub-ohm coils are ideal for high VG e-liquids, such as short-fills. Coils with lower ohm ratings provide a more intense flavour and large vapour clouds. However, they consume e-liquid more quickly because they use more power to generate enhanced vapour and flavour.

Higher ohm atomisers consume less e-liquid and offer a mellow draw. It's essential to choose the right type of e-liquid for your coil's resistance. Lower ohm coils are suitable for high VG e-liquids, while higher ohm coils are ideal for high PG e-liquids.

BLU Pro Clearomizer

"Very easy to fill up and keep track of the liquid levels. The clearomizer lasts a long time and I use it very often. I like that it's not a huge plume of vapour, but you still get the visual exhale from it. It does not spit liquid back at you."

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace my tank and coils?

Depending on how often you use your vape, you may find that you need to replace your coils once every 5-14 days. The general rule is to replace your coil once the flavour in your vape kit starts to taste burnt or 'off' in any way. You can replace your tanks roughly every month or so after you notice significant wear and tear.

What does it mean to prime my coil, and do I have to do it?

Yes, you have to prime your coil, as this is a necessary part of preparing your device before first use. Priming is when you let your coil soak in e-liquid for 5-10 minutes, so it is fully saturated before you start vaping. This avoids your coil burning, which leads to an unpleasant taste. You don't have to do this every time; it is only for when you are using a completely new and unused coil.
