What is TPD?

TPD stands for the Tobacco Products Directive, a European directive that introduces various regulations to e-cigarette products. The UK implementation of this directive is known as the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations, or "TRPR" for short.

A Breakdown of the Tobacco Products Directive

The TPD has been in place since May 2016. Fortunately, here in the UK, retailers have had until 19th May 2017 to implement the necessary changes. The major changes that will affect you as a consumer are as follows:

  • E-Liquid bottles will be limited to a maximum of 10ml (NOT including nicotine-free liquids).
  • E-Liquid tank capacity has been capped at 2ml (for disposables, cartomizers and clearomizers).
  • New packaging will warn consumers of the addictive nature of nicotine.
  • E-Liquids will be limited to 20mg of nicotine per ml maximum.
  • E-cigarettes must be resistant to breakage and leakage, and must be easy to refill without spilling any liquid.

All products must undergo systematic compliance testing, overseen by the  Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which maintains the power to remove harmful/dangerous products from service.

There's no need to worry though, manufacturers have been working on their products over the past year to make sure they (and we) can continue to offer the wide range of e-cigs, e-liquids and cartridges that you have come to expect.
