We Ask: Can You Vape When Pregnant?

Vapes may be much safer than smoking, but can you still vape while pregnant?

The belly of a pregnant woman Thanks to a growing amount of scientific and medical research, and increasing levels of public information, more people are learning that vaping contains almost none of the many hazards of smoking. In the UK, we're told by the health authorities that vaping is "at least 95%" safer than lighting up cigarettes, a figure that is propelling many smokers to switch to e-cigarettes and stamp out smoking for good. But while expectant women are certainly not advised to smoke, as they would be doing untold harm not only to themselves but their developing fetus, some wonder if you can vape while pregnant. It's not a surprising question to ask, because the harmful substances found in burning tobacco are simply not present in vape gear and their e-liquid refills. And women who may have been smokers before they found out they were pregnant and are now struggling with cravings, having been forced to quit, might look on vaping as a viable, healthier alternative while carrying their child. The truth during this very special time for expectant mother and growing child, however, is that the woman should not be putting anything into her body that may potentially put her infant's development at risk. And although e-cigarettes are said to have a health-hazard level of under 5%, there is still a chance of the unknown and that something might go wrong. Let's take a look at both cigarettes and e-cigarettes and see if we can deliver some rationale.

Smoking Out the Evils of Tobacco

The main reason smoking is so incredibly bad for people's health (including those that are just starting to form into people), is that when tobacco burns it releases an enormous amount of toxic chemicals. Do you really want lead, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, formaldehyde, ammonia, radioactive elements and carbon monoxide going into your body, whether you're pregnant or not? And they are just some of the thousands of toxins in cigarette smoke — at least 70 of which are known to cause various cancers — and so it's no wonder that secondhand smoke is also so deadly. It claims up to 1 million lives around the world each year, and should also be avoided by pregnant women at all costs. This includes expectant mothers whose partners smoke, whether inside or outside the home.   As the NHS says in its advisory on smoking while pregnant: "Every cigarette you smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, so smoking when you are pregnant harms your unborn baby. Cigarettes can restrict the essential oxygen supply to your baby. As a result, their heart has to beat harder every time you smoke."

A Pregnancy Vaping Alternative?

Now we turn to e-cigarettes and how they measure up compared to tobacco cigarettes. Basically, there's none of the health-destroying chemicals given off by burning tobacco, because not only is there no tobacco, but nothing is burned in the first place. Instead, vape juice is heated so that it releases vapour, and the liquid typically contains a vegetable-type base, nicotine and a flavour, such as apple, strawberry and many more. E-liquid in vapes may also have no nicotine in it — just the base and the flavours alone. In non-pregnant adults, nicotine is not known to be especially hazardous. "Many people think nicotine is very harmful to health," says the NHS in its annual Stoptober advice in which it urges smokers to switch to vaping. "In fact, although it is addictive, nicotine is relatively harmless — it's the thousands of other chemicals in tobacco smoke that cause almost all the harm from smoking." The NHS advises pregnant women that they can use nicotine replacement therapies, including patches and gums, during their pregnancies if it will stop them from smoking. And it says: "If using an e-cigarette helps you to stop smoking, it is much safer for you and your baby than continuing to smoke."
